I read Gabrielson's account of his experiences as a truant officer in Bell Gardens, California "The Hooky Cop" when I was in college 40 years ago. I was impressed by his experiences and insights, and have reread it from time to time over the years. I was pleasantly surprised to see this new book on Kindle after so many years, and had to double check to make sure it was the same author. "Eleven Days of Panic" set in a fictionalized Bell Gardens in the 1950's is a first-rate account of high school students and teachers where problems and conflicts result in a crime spree and a long aftermath of punishment and redemption.Product details

This was a strange one. A riveting story told in a linear fashion without too much imagination. Towards the end, it dragged somewhat, but in the first half, the poorly told narrative succeeded in spite of itself. It's not that I was ever confused, the fault lay in the lack of imaginative word use combined with hackneyed descriptions of places and events. There was a lack of variety in sentence structure and event unfolding. The outcomes were never in question. Way too predictable.
Overall, I'd say it could have been improved with the use of about 40% fewer pages.
